In response to requests from people interested in National Environmental Policy Act activities occurring at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho Operations Office, the department has extended the public comment period that began September 1 on the Draft Environmental Assessment for Replacement Capability for Disposal of Remote-Handled Low-Level Radioactive Waste Generated at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho Site.

RICHLAND, Wash. –The Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in coordination with the Washington Department of Ecology, have made plans for remediating contaminated soil at four locations in the center of the Hanford Site.

CARLSBAD, N.M. –The U.S. Department of Energy has successfully removed all legacy contact-handled transuranic (TRU) waste from the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), near Chicago, Illinois. In September, all legacy TRU waste was removed from the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory (BAPL), near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Environmental Management (EM) program recently completed its largest demolition project to date. The removal of K-33, a former gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment facility spanning 32-acres, was completed several months ahead of schedule. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funded the $51 million project.

In response to public comments and requests, the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office is extending the public comment period for the Draft Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) for the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and Off-Site Locations in Nevada. The formal comment period will close on December 2, 2011, rather than October 27.

AIKEN, S.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River celebrated the cleanup and closure of the P and R Reactor Areas under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program at the Savannah River Site and announced the vision for future missions at the site.

Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Receives 10,000th Shipment

CARLSBAD, N.M.– The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has successfully completed cleanup of all Cold War legacy transuranic (TRU) waste at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory (BAPL) near Pittsburgh, Pa., permanently disposing of it at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).
