Project Description

Introduction

This project will increase the energy efficiency within new home construction on the reservation through such items as the following: optimizing solar heat gain with south facing windows equaling 8% - 10% of the floor area; earth berming (up to eight feet on the north wall); planting wind breaking trees and plants; super-insulation such that homes require only 3 BTUs/sf/degree-day (with only one BTU coming from purchased heat); using energy efficient windows, doors, and construction (air/vapor barriers, sealants, etc.); using air-to-air heat exchangers; energy efficient lighting; low-flow shower heads and faucets; and active solar water heating systems. The project was developed and implemented under the direction of the Oneida Housing Authority (OHA).

Goals and Objectives

The central goal of this project is to improve the energy efficiency of approximately 25 homes occupied by the Oneida Tribe.

Project Actions and Resultant Data

All work planned by the Oneida Housing Authority was accomplished to produce energy efficient homes on the reservation.

Results, Conclusions, Findings, and Recommendations

The project (beyond the energy efficiency aspects) produced the following results:

  • Roads: asphalt, curb, and gutter are installed; asphalt topcoat and repairs are complete.

  • Walk bridge, gardens, walk paths, and landscaping complete.

  • All 25 homes are complete.

  • Excavation (lots filled in with top soil) complete.

  • Street lights complete.

  • Completed rebate paperwork with Wisconsin Public Service for a $20,000 to $25,000 return to OHA.

  • Completed paperwork for DOE Grant.

  • All air exchange replacements are completed.

  • Completed WPS rebate information for a $10,000 return to OHA.

  • Heating cost for 10-11 homes averaged $45 in December 1995.
