CAST Specialty Transportation, Inc. and Visionary Solutions, LLC, to provide trucking services
to transport transuranic (TRU) waste, from DOE and other defense-related TRU waste generator sites to
the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site, near Carlsbad, New Mexico.
A gravel mound, larger than half a city block and several feet thick, is the only visible feature that remains at the site of a Cold War-era spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facility at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho site. About $44 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds helped Idaho Cleanup Project crews accelerate the demolition of the facility that during its 40 years of operation recovered more than $1 billion worth of uranium.
Idaho Falls, ID – After completing a careful assessment, the U.S. Department of Energy has determined that building a new facility at its Idaho National Laboratory site for continued disposal of remote-handled low level radioactive waste generated by operations at the site will not have a significant impact on the environment.
