DOE issues Finding of No Significant Impact on Environmental Assessment for Replacement Capability for Disposal of Remote-Handled Low Level Radioactive Waste Generated at Idaho Site

Idaho Falls, ID – After completing a careful assessment, the U.S. Department of Energy has determined that building a new facility at its Idaho National Laboratory site for continued disposal of remote-handled low level radioactive waste generated by operations at the site will not have a significant impact on the environment.

Demolition Begins on Hanford’s Historic Plutonium Vaults - Plutonium Finishing Plant on track to meet regulatory milestone

RICHLAND, WASH. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and contractor CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company (CH2M HILL) began demolishing a vault complex that once held stores of plutonium for the U.S. nuclear weapons program at the Hanford Site in southeast Washington State.

DOE Awards Contract for Moab Mill Tailings Cleanup

Cincinnati– The Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that it has awarded a competitive small business contract worth $121.2 million over the next five years as part of the
Department’s continued efforts to protect the Colorado River and downstream water users by removing uranium tailings at the former Atlas uranium-ore processing facility in Moab, Utah.
Portage, Inc., a small business based in Idaho Falls, Idaho, will be leading the new contract.

10,000th Shipment Celebrated at WIPP

CARLSBAD, N.M., October 24, 2011 – Approximately 130 people gathered at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) on October 22, to celebrate the 10,000th shipment of transuranic (TRU) waste to WIPP, which arrived safely late last month.
