Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman to Deliver Keynote Address at IEEE PES Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies

Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman will give the keynote address at the 4th annual IEEE PES Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT 2013) on Monday, February 25. The conference, which will be held from February 24 through February 27 in Washington, DC, is a forum to discuss state-of-the-art innovations in smart grid technologies. The event will feature tutorials, panel sessions and paper presentations by international experts.

PSERC Webinar Series on the Future Grid Initiative Begins January 22, 2013

The Department has funded an effort at the Power Systems Engineering Research Center (PSERC) entitled The Future Grid to Enable Sustainable Energy Systems. The initiative investigates the requirements of an electric grid with high penetrations of sustainable energy systems and heavy reliance on cyber systems for sensing and communication.

PSERC is offering a free, public webinar series to present progress reports from the Future Grid Initiative. Two webinars are currently scheduled on January 22, 2013 and February 5, 2013.

A new article by OE’s Kerry Cheung, William Parks and Anjan Bose in IEEE’s Smart Grid newsletter describes the Department of Energy’s strategic plan to achieve a future electricity system that will be cost-effective, seamless from generation to end-use, and capable of meeting all clean energy demands and capacity requirements.

DOE Issues Funding Opportunity for Academic-Industry Collaboration - Synchrophasor Engineering Education Program

Use of synchrophasor data from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) is considered to be a promising tool to monitor modern electric power systems. However, only a limited number of professionals, researchers, and students have the knowledge and expertise to understand and analyze the high-speed, time-synchronized data that will be generated by the deployment of synchrophasors.

2012 Microgrid Workshop Summary Released

The Department of Energy has released the summary report from the July 30-31, 2012 Microgrid Workshop presented by the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The workshop was held in response to discussions at the preceding DOE Microgrid Workshop, held in August 2011, which called for sharing lessons learned and best practices for system integration from existing projects in the U.S. (including military microgrids) and internationally.

Registration Open for Winter Fuels Outlook Conference on October 10, 2012

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and the National Association of State Energy Officials are hosting the 2012 – 2013 Winter Fuels Outlook Conference on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 in Washington, DC. This important supply and demand forecast event will address global oil supply uncertainty; the effects of projected winter weather on the demand for heating and key transportation fuels; and a range of market factors that may impact the supply, distribution and prices of petroleum, natural gas and electricity this winter.

OE's SGIG Program Featured in EnergyBiz Magazine

An article in the September/October issue of EnergyBiz focuses on DOE's Smart Grid Investment Grant program and praises its impact on technology and the workforce in the energy sector. To illustrate the range of the program, the article highlights two grantees: the Western Electricity Coordinating Council's $108 million synchrophasor project in the Western Interconnection, and Talquin Electric Cooperative in Florida, with a $16 million project to upgrade infrastructure and service in an area where until recently customers read their own meters to determine their bills.
