The 2012 National Electricity Forum will be held on February 8 and 9, 2012, and is sponsored by the DOE Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). Webinar Series Begins This Month: Issues in Designing the Future Grid

The Department has funded an effort at the Power Systems Engineering Research Center (PSERC) to investigate the requirements of an electric grid with high penetrations of sustainable energy systems and heavy reliance on cyber systems for sensing and communication. The goal of the effort is to stimulate discussion among the academic, industry, and government communities on what it will take to shape the future grid for the mid-21st Century.

January 2012 ARRA Energy Assurance Planning Bulletin Available

The Department released the January 2012 issue of the ARRA Energy Assurance Planning Bulletin (EAPB). The ARRA EAPB is issued quarterly to provide information on energy assurance planning resources, upcoming events, training opportunities, and important grant deliverable dates. This is the ninth issue of the EAP Bulletin; previous issues are available for download.

Energy Department Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman Addresses 2011 FERC Reliability Technical Conference

Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Patricia Hoffman today addressed the 2011 Federal Energy Regulatory Commission technical conference in Washington, D.C. In remarks prepared for delivery, Assistant Secretary Hoffman discussed recent evaluations of proposed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules and the impact those rules could be expected to have on our nation’s electrical grid.

ORNL's Amit Goyal wins E.O. Lawrence Award

Dr. Amit Goyal, a high temperature superconductivity (HTS) researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been named a winner of the Department of Energy's Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award honoring U.S. scientists and engineers for exceptional contributions in research and development supporting DOE and its mission.

The Department is initiating preparations for development of the 2012 National Electric Transmission Congestion Study. The Department is seeking comments on what publicly-available data and analysis should be used to identify and understand the significance and character of transmission congestion.

Federal Register Notice: Plan for Conduct of 2012 Electric Transmission Congestion Study

The Department has issued a Federal Register Notice initiating preparations for development of the 2012 National Electric Transmission Congestion Study. The Department is seeking comments on what publicly-available data and information should be considered, and what types of analysis should be performed to identify and understand the significance and character of transmission congestion. DOE will host four regional pre-study workshops in early December 2011 to receive input and suggestions concerning the study.

DOE Live Video Presentation: Smart Grid Development in the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and Brookhaven National Laboratory are conducting a free, online presentation on smart grid development in the U.S, Thursday, Dec. 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST. This presentation will give audiences an opportunity to interact with leading smart grid expert Dan T. Ton, program manager in the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, who oversees smart grid research and development within the U.S.

New Funding Opportunity Provides More Knowledge to Consumers about their Energy Use; Could Lead to Lower Energy Bills for Consumers
