The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Sustainability Performance Office (SPO) oversees departmental sustainability efforts required by Executive Order (E.O.) 13693 and related E.O.s, Federal laws, and regulations.
The SPO was created in 2010 to consolidate and streamline Departmental sustainability efforts. DOE Order 436.1, Departmental Sustainability, outlines the roles and responsibilities for managing sustainability at DOE. The Order assigns the SPO as DOE’s principal point of contact on all sustainability matters, charging the office with implementing DOE’s Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) and managing compliance with statutory and administrative sustainability requirements.
The SPO provides assistance to DOE programs, sites, and national laboratories on meeting sustainability goals. The SPO also represents the Department on external sustainability matters, including representation at interagency workgroups and meetings with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).
