The Retention and Management of the Department’s Records

The Department of Energy (Department) did not effectively manage the retention and disposition of its records. 1 Specifically, the Department did not always ensure that essential electronic records, especially electronic mail (e-mail), were appropriately retained. Additionally, the Department maintained multiple document and tracking systems that performed essentially the same function, and had not adequately planned for the scheduling and disposition of records at its closure sites.
