Services of the Office of the General Counsel

The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice, counsel, and support to the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and all Departmental elements, except the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.  This Office assures that the Department operates in compliance with all pertinent laws and regulations. The Immediate Office of the General Counsel directs, manages, and supervises all activities assigned to the General Counsel, including the following offices:

Office of the Chief Counsel for Loans Programs

The mission of the Loan Programs Office is to accelerate the domestic commercial deployment of innovative and advanced clean energy technologies at a scale sufficient to contribute meaningfully to the achievement of our national clean energy objectives—including job creation; reducing dependency on foreign oil; improving our environmental legacy; and enhancing American competitiveness in the global economy of the 21st century.

Office of the Chief Counsel for ARPA-E The Advanced Projects Research Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) was established in 2007 to fund the development and deployment of transformational energy technologies in the United States.
Field Counsel Offices The Department of Energy employs a complement of lawyers who work in each of the Department's Operations Offices and Field Offices under the leadership of a Chief Counsel.
