Electronics Stewardship

DOE is committed to responsible environmental stewardship of its electronics, including computers, displays, printers and cell phones. In order to comply with Executive Order 13693, Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade, and other statutory requirements, DOE policy and actions support the following principles of electronic stewardship:

  • procuring environmentally sustainable electronics, including EPEAT-registered, ENERGY STAR certified, and low standby power products;
  • enabling electronics power management and automatic duplexing capabilities;
  • establishing and implementing policies to extend the useful life of agency electronics; and,
  • reusing and responsibly recycling excess and surplus (end-of-life) electronics through third-party certified electronics recyclers and re-furbishers.

DOE adherence to federal electronics stewardship requirements is addressed in DOE Order 436.1, Departmental Sustainability. This Order outlines Departmental sustainability requirements and identifies Departmental responsibilities for achieving federal sustainability goals. Annual successes and progress in meeting electronics stewardship goals are highlighted in DOE's Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan.

DOE and its facilities have been recognized for exemplary electronics stewardship activities over the years, including:

  • 2015 EPEAT Purchaser Awards;
  • 2007 White House Closing the Circle Award for Electronics Stewardship;
  • Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC) Awards every year of the program, from 2005 through 2013; and
  • Electronics Reuse and Recycling Campaign (ERRC) Awards every year of the program, from 2006 through 2009.
