Funding Number: DE-FOA-0001495
Funding Amount: $25,000,000

Description

The Enabling Extreme Real-Time Grid Integration of Solar Energy (ENERGISE) funding program will develop distribution planning and operation solutions to enable dynamic, automated, and cost-effective management of distributed and variable generation sources, like solar, onto the grid. These software and hardware solutions will be highly scalable, data-driven, and capable of real-time system operation and planning. Solutions developed under ENERGISE will enable grid operators to gather up-to-the-minute measurement and forecast data from distributed energy sources and optimize system performance using sensor, communications, and data analytics technologies. This funding program has two topic areas:

  • Topic Area 1: Near-term projects, the focus of the first topic area, will develop commercially-ready, scalable distribution system planning and real-time grid operation solutions compatible with existing grid infrastructure to enable the addition of solar at 50% of the peak distribution load by 2020. One-year field demonstration is required with utility partners.
  • Topic Area 2: Projects that tackle the long-term challenge under Topic 2 will develop transformative and highly scalable technologies compatible with advanced grid infrastructure to enable solar at 100% of the peak distribution load by 2030. Large scale simulation is required to demonstration performance and scalability.

SunShot expects to make between 10 and 15 awards ranging between $500,000 and $4,000,000 for Topic Area 1 and between $500,000 and $2,000,000 for Topic Area 2.
