Roland Risser - Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Power (Acting)
In this position, Roland Risser is responsible for leading all of EERE's applied research, development, and demonstration for renewable energy, including geothermal, solar, and wind and water power.
He brings six years of experience directing EERE's Building Technologies Program to help create a self-sustaining market for building energy efficiency. This included developing innovative advanced technologies, promoting highly efficient buildings and homes, and accelerating the adoption of building codes and equipment standards.
Before joining EERE in 2010, he served on Pacific Gas and Electric's executive team overseeing Strategic Planning and Emerging Technologies, as well as Customer Energy Efficiency and Tariffs and Compliance and other key roles in the utility company. His experience included work on wind, hydroelectric, and photovoltaic generation systems. With a combined 30-year career at PG&E, Roland worked his way through progressively more senior level positions.
He is also active in boards and commissions, including serving as Chairman of the International Technical Committee for ISO 50001 (Energy Management).
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Irvine, a Master of Science degree from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and graduated from the Executive Development Program from the UC-Berkeley.
