Hybrid Membrane System for Industrial Water Reuse

A single hybrid system for industrial wastewater treatment and reuse that combines two known processes—forward osmosis and membrane distillation—will be developed and demonstrated. This system will use waste heat to treat a wide variety of waste streams at manufacturing facilities. Based on current industrial wastewater practices and preliminary analysis, this technology has the potential to reduce electricity costs associated with advanced wastewater treatment by more than 90%, reduce water treatment costs by 20% or more, and reduce carbon emissions by more than 90%.
