Ranking the Top Green Power Providers

Which utilities are leading the way for clean electricity generation in the United States?

Yesterday, the Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory released its “Top 10” rankings of the leading utility green power programs across the nation.

Green power programs give consumers the option to choose to power their homes and businesses using clean renewable energy sources -- like wind and solar. In total, this group of green power leaders is supporting more than 4.2 million megawatt-hours of voluntary green power, up from 3.9 million MWh in 2010.

The “Top 10” rankings were designated in the following categories: total sales of renewable energy to program participants: total number of customer participants; the percentage of customer participation; green power sales as a percentage of total utility retail electricity sales; and the lowest price premium charged for a green power program using new renewable resources.

Take a look at the map above to find out if your utility made the list.
