Warm, humid climate and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico produce turbulent weather patterns that regularly bring tornadoes and hurricanes to Montgomery, AL. As a result, each year the state's capital city must manage tons of construction waste and storm debris. Now, thanks to a $2.5 million Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the U.S. Department of Energy, Montgomery will revamp its landfill sorting efforts and retrofit its historical city.

Energy crops and agricultural residue, like corncobs and stover, are becoming part of rural America’s energy future. Unlike the more common biofuel derived from corn, these are non-food/feed based cellulosic feedstocks, and the energy content of the biomass makes it ideal for converting to sustainable fuel.

Charlevoix, Mich. residents are taking steps to become a more environmentally-conscious community, and a $50,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant will help that cause. The funding will be used to launch projects aimed at energy efficiency and sustainability, such as retrofitting the city’s fire and emergency vehicles with new, energy-efficient lighting.

TODAY: Senior Obama Administration Officials to Discuss Progress of Recovery Act Battery and Electric Drive Grants

With 90 percent of its energy coming from oil, Hawaii is the most oil-dependent state in the nation. The Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative is an ambitious plan to reverse that. Outlining a combination of increased energy efficiency and renewable energy sources the HCEI maps out a path toward achieving the state’s goal of meeting at least 70 percent of its energy needs from clean energy by 2030.

An Indian tribe in Anadarko, Oklahoma is installing solar panel roofs on two tribal government buildings.

Terry Sandstrom never thought he would run his house entirely on renewable energy, but when faced with a $100,000 price tag to get connected to the grid, he had to look at alternative options.

Purpose: To provide guidance to recipients of financing programs funded through the Department of Energy's (DOE's) State Energy Program (SEP) (Grantees).

Scope: The provisions of this guidance apply to recipients of SEP funds, pursuant to Formula Grant or American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
