Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced $2 million over three years for six regional awardees to create and administer a network of student-focused business creation competitions and inspire young entrepreneurs to found innovative, clean energy companies. Announced by DOE’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Dr.

Hurricane Irene struck the East coast last Friday, making landfall in North Carolina. Over the weekend, the storm traveled up the East Coast and into the mid-Atlantic and New England areas of the U.S. In response to Irene, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia declared a State of Emergency.

The Energy Department is closely monitoring Hurricane Irene as it travels up the East Coast of the United States. Emergency Situation Reports are now available detailing the storm's impact to the energy sector and restoration activities being taken.

Today, Secretary Chu announced the selection of 40 projects across 15 states to receive more than $175 million to accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation vehicle technologies. From state-of-the-art electric drive batteries to light-weight vehicles, these projects will help improve vehicle fuel efficiency and create quality jobs.

The selected projects focus on eight key approaches to improving vehicle efficiency, including:
