Commercial-Scale Renewable-Energy Grants (Rhode Island)

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) provides incentives for renewable-energy projects. Incentive programs are funded by the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Fund (RIREF) and alternative compliance payments (ACPs) from the state’s renewable portfolios standard (RPS). Currently, the RIEDC provides grants for small-scale solar projects and direct funding for commercial-scale renewable-energy projects.

Bio-Heating Oil Tax Credit (Corporate)

Maryland allows individuals and corporations to take an income tax credit of $0.03/gallon for purchases of biodiesel used for space heating or water heating. The maximum credit is $500 per year. It may not be refunded or carried over to subsequent years. In order to qualify for the tax credit, the heating oil must be at least 5% biodiesel sourced from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved feedstocks or be accepted under the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard.

Biomass Equipment & Materials Compensating Tax Deduction

In 2005 New Mexico adopted a policy to allow businesses to deduct the value of biomass equipment and biomass materials used for the processing of biopower, biofuels or biobased products in determining the amount of Compensating Tax due.

City of Madison - Green Power Purchasing

In 1999, Madison’s Metro Maintenance & Administration Facility began purchasing 25% of its electricity from Madison Gas & Electric’s wind power program. The additional cost to purchase the wind power is approximately $26,000 per year. Metro officials estimate that their wind power purchase is equivalent to running ten buses per year with no carbon monoxide emissions. In 2005, the city established a goal to increase the entire city’s electricity purchases to 10% renewable energy by 2006 and 20% renewable energy by 2010.

Scientists and engineers at the Energy Department and its national laboratories are finding new, more efficient ways to convert biomass into biofuels that can take the place of conventional fuels like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. At Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Environmental Science Division, graduate students and researchers use transplanted trees in a number of studies, including those involving biomass conversion to biofuels.
