What types of technical assistance does DOE offer?

Technical assistance is provided through national laboratories, regional and national associations of state decision-makers and subject matter experts, and federal government staff. The existing and ongoing types of assistance include:

  • Data collection and assessment activities to help states, localities and tribes determine impacts, evaluate policy options and identify technology and market strategies.
  • Convenings of public officials and stakeholders to share best practices, tackle key issues and build consensus for preferred courses of action.
  • Education and training through workshops and webinars to raise knowledge levels and better equip policy and decision makers to address local and regional needs.
  • Consultations for quick-turnaround analysis involving technical experts advising policyand decision makers on specific matters of interest.

What’s new about this state, local, and tribal technical assistance website?

Many of DOE’s technology program offices have offered various forms of technical assistance for a number of years, even decades. Those programs and efforts are ongoing and are reflected in this new web interface portal. As the energy sector changes and the needs of state, local, tribal officials change, we are responding by providing a central site for technical assistance across DOE’s portfolio and by developing new resources and expertise. This site links to existing resources familiar to partners already working with individual DOE program offices and will provide new material to more fully capture the full spectrum of energy options. You may still request technical assistance through any existing DOE program.

What is the process after I submit a request?

Following receipt of your email, DOE will respond within 48 hours to schedule a call with you to scope your needs. The call will include representatives from DOE programs with expertise related to your request. DOE will provide information on existing materials, resources and activities. If your request requires additional direct assistance and support, DOE will consider next steps in consultation with you and as resources allow.

If I am already working with a DOE office on technical assistance, do I need to do something different?

No, please continue working with your established point of contact at DOE.

Who is eligible to receive DOE technical assistance?

All of the resources listed on our technical assistance site are available to the public. Eligible entities with specific inquiries will be accepted from state and local policy and decision makers (e.g. public utility commissioners, state legislators, tribal leaders, local government officials, governors advisors, state energy officials, state air regulators), regional associations of states and local government officials, and tribal organizations.

What is the difference between information on funding and financing?

Through our technical assistance site, DOE provides information about financing solutions, or how to set up innovative programs that enable investments in energy projects and programs. Other sites provide information on available funds from DOE for specific projects and programs, including how to apply. Please refer to the main DOE page for more information.
