Uranium Hexafluoride Conversion Facility; Paducah, Kentucky Site

This EIS analyzes potential environmental impacts of the proposed construction, operation, maintenance, and decontamination and decommissioning of a depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) conversion facility at three locations within the Paducah site; transportation of depleted uranium conversion products and waste materials to a disposal facility; transportation and sale of the hydrogen fluoride (HF) produced as a conversion co-product; and neutralization of HF to calcium fluoride and its sale or disposal in the event that the HF product is not sold. The EIS also considers a no action alternative that assumes continued storage of DUF6 at the Paducah site.

DOE had announced in 2001 its intention to prepare DOE/EIS-0329 for two DUF6 conversion facilities, and then determined in 2003 that it would instead prepare this EIS for a proposed facility at Paducah, Kentucky, and a separate EIS (DOE/EIS-0360) for a proposed facility at Portsmouth, Ohio.

DOE cancelled a supplement analysis (DOE/EIS-0359-SA-01 and DOE/EIS-0360-SA-01). In 2016, DOE announced its intent to prepare a supplemental EIS (DOE/EIS-0359-S1 and DOE/EIS-0360-S1) for the Paducah and Portsmouth DUF6 facilities.
