This EIS evaluates the potential alternatives and impacts associated with a proposal to process certain plutonium residues and all of the scrub alloy currently stored at Rocky Flats. While ongoing stabilization activities at Rocky Flats are addressing immediate health and safety concerns associated with existing storage conditions, the indefinite storage of these materials, even after stabilization, would continue to present health and safety concerns that could only be eliminated by disposal or other disposition of the materials. Thus, this EIS evaluates alternative processing technologies to prepare these materials for disposal as transuranic waste at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico, or other disposition.
