Great Northern Transmission Line Project
The Department of Energy announces its intent to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) (DOE/EIS-0499) to assess the potential environmental impacts from its proposed federal action of granting a Presidential permit to Minnesota Power to construct, operate, maintain, and connect a new electric transmission line across the U.S.-Canada border in northern Minnesota. Minnesota Power’s proposed project includes an approximately 220-mile, 500 kilovolt (kV) overhead, single-circuit, alternating current (AC) electric transmission system from the Canadian Province of Manitoba to the existing Blackberry Substation near Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Portions of the proposed project may affect floodplains and wetlands. This notice of intent also serves as a notice of proposed floodplain or wetland action.
