Routine Site Activities at the Shoal, Nevada, Site
CX(s) Applied: B1.3, B3.1
Offices(s): Legacy Management
An underground nuclear test (code-named Project Shoal) was conducted at the Shoal Site in 1963. Monitoring during and after the test confirmed that no radioactivity escaped to the surface. The U.S. Department of Energy samples selected groundwater monitoring wells and monitors water levels in on-site and off-site wells associated with the Shoal Site. The purge water associated with sample collection does not exceed allowable radionuclide levels and is placed on the ground to naturally infiltrate. There are no buildings or facilities on the site. On an as-needed basis, minor maintenance actions related to the groundwater monitoring wells may be required.
