Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) proposes to fund the acquisition of 87 acres in the Kootenai River watershed for wildlife habitat mitigation. The acquisition parcel was selected for protection in part due to the potential to restore altered riparian habitats for wildlife, resident fish species (i.e., rainbow trout, bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout, kokanee) and the Kootenai River White Sturgeon, which is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The Kootenai River watershed also supports local populations of migratory waterfowl, neotropical birds, raptors, elk, deer and moose. The parcel is also located in an area significant to the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, and evidence of traditional use goes back thousands of years.
