Funding will support laboratory and bench-scale research and development, and pilot scale testing of a low-cost, flywheel-based energy storage system. The proposed work is consistent with the goal of Grid-Scale Rampable Intermittently Dispachable Storage (GRIDS): development of new technologies to enable the widespread deployment of cost-effective, grid-scale energy storage. Work consists entirely of research, development, and demonstration to be completed at the Boeing Research and Technology development and test facilities in Kent and Seattle, Washington. The work performed will be limited to research, development, pilot scale testing, and evaluation.
