The tribe proposes to supplement diesel-powered furnaces with wood stoves for home heating to the community to reduce fossil fuel consumption and electricity use. Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funding would be used to purchase the equipment necessary to outfit approximately 20 homes with energy efficient wood stoves. The provision of wood stoves with an efficiency of approximately 80 percent would not only improve the energy efficiency of home heating in Kivalina, it would also reduce the cost of living and promote a cleaner environment.
