Kirtland Air Force Base Cougar Research Support
CX(s) Applied: B3.3
Location(s): New Mexico
Office(s): Sandia Site Office
Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) proposes to assist Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) contract biologists in the use of track surveys and systematic camera arrays to assess the prevalence of cougars (Puma concolor) on KAFB and United States Department of Energy (DOE) land. In addition, four cougars would be fitted with global positioning system (GPS) satellite collars to assess their use of base property, to calculate the probability of detecting resident cougars using remote cameras, to measure predation rates on base wildlife, and to create a map of cougar activity and habitat preferences.
