EM-31 Alternative Chemical Cleaning Program
CX(s) Applied: B3.6
Location(s): Aiken, South Carolina
Office(s): Environmental Management, Savannah River Operations Office
Two types of testing will be conducted. Dissolution testing of sludge materials and organic destruction scoping tests with spent acids containing dissolved sludge materials. (1) Dissolution Testing - Dissolution testing will involve treatment of sludge simulants and known mineral phases with inorganic acids, carboxylic acids, mixtures of acids, other complexants, and caustic. The solubilities of selected components and the fate of various species will be examined under a range of conditions. Testing will utilize sludge simulants and simple, known mineral phases, or mixtures of phases. Some solid phases and sludges may include Resource Conservation and Recovery Act hazardous chemicals requiring special handling. (2) Organic Destruction Scoping Tests - Various methods may be evaluated for the destruction of soluble organic components in dissolved sludge solutions. These methods may include the addition of oxidizing chemicals such as permanganate and nitric acid. Organic destruction will likely involve the production of gases including oxides of carbon and nitrogen which will be released into the hood ventilation system.
