The Office of Science's Spallation Neutron Source Instruments – Next Generation (SING) Project
The SING team capitalized on the technical and managerial efficiency gained by combining the five instruments into one project. This innovative approached allowed the instrument development teams to standardize components, bundle procurements, and share expertise for design of shielding, detectors, choppers and neutron optics. Key to this success was the extensive utilization of the risk reduction opportunities offered by long-lead procurements. Through effective planning and scheduling the project team was able to accelerate installation activities that could be performed during the host facility’s normal eight hour maintenance periods. The project team was the first to officially post lessons learned on the Office of Science website for all to benefit. All instruments are operational. SING was completed two months ahead of schedule and under budget.
