Katrina, now a Category 4 hurricane, makes landfall at 6:10 a.m. in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, just south of Buras, with winds of 140 mph. Katrina is very large with hurricane force winds extending 125 miles from the center. Continuing northward, Katrina passes just to the east of New Orleans and makes a second landfall near the Louisiana/Mississippi border at 10:00 a.m., with maximum winds of near 125 mph (Category 3 status). Katrina weakens throughout the day but is still a hurricane 100 miles inland near Laurel, Mississippi.
