The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management is conducting the fourth Five-Year Review of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) remedy for the Central Operable Unit (COU) at the Rocky Flats Site. The purpose of the review is to ensure the CERCLA remedy remains protective of human health and the environment. The remedy for the COU consists of institutional and physical controls, incorporating continued monitoring and maintenance. This Five-Year Review report is required to be completed in August 2017.

The Rocky Flats Site, located approximately 16 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado, was a key production plant in the nation’s nuclear weapons program from 1953 to 1994. In the past, production activities resulted in the release of chemical and radiological contaminants to surface water, groundwater, soil, and air. The plant’s mission changed to cleanup and closure in the early 1990s and the cleanup was officially completed when DOE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment signed the Corrective Action Decision/Record of Decision on September 29, 2006.
