The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy, in partnership with Western Area Power Administration, is hosting a free webinar entitled "Energy and Economic Success Studies" on Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.

Through funding provided by DOE’s Indian energy programs between 2002 and 2016, DOE invested nearly $66.5 million in more than 200 tribal energy projects implemented across the contiguous 48 states and Alaska. This webinar will showcase how such projects have contributed to more than 18.5 megawatts of new tribal renewable energy generation capacity, lowered electricity bills for more than 2,500 tribal buildings and more than 29,000 tribal members, resulted in total cost savings of $9 million to $11 million annually, and contributed to sustainable, long-term economic growth for tribal communities. Learn more about these project successes.

Attendees will learn how DOE grant recipients that have co-funded successful tribal energy projects have assessed the feasibility of energy efficiency projects and renewable energy installations, built the institutional capacity to manage their energy needs, and ultimately demonstrated the viability of clean energy on tribal lands.

  • David Conrad, Deputy Director of the Office of Indian Energy, will provide introductions.
  • Travis Lowder, Renewable Energy Analyst at DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, will give an overview of tools, resources, and information available to tribes, as well as the five-step project development process.
  • Joe Bresette, Grant Developer for the Tonto Apache Tribe, will present a case study on how his Tribe saved 40% to 50% in energy costs through community solar rooftop projects.
  • Dave Pelunis-Messier, Rural Energy Coordinator for the Tanana Chiefs Conference, will present case studies of various successful tribal energy projects in rural Alaska.
