The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy and the Tribal Energy Program, with support from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), are hosting a series of interactive workshops this summer that will walk participants through the process for developing commercial-, community-, and facility-scale renewable energy projects on tribal lands.

As part of its mission to build tribal energy capacity, the Office of Indian Energy has developed renewable energy curriculum specifically for Tribes that includes 17 online courses covering a range of topics from renewable energy basics to advanced project development and finance concepts.

The in-person workshops are specifically designed for, and limited to, elected tribal leaders, tribal executives, and tribal staff. They offer a unique opportunity for participants to walk through the curriculum with renewable energy project experts, get hands-on training on how to use technology resource assessment tools, and hear project case studies and lessons learned from other Tribes.

Gerald Warrington of the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin, who attended the commercial-scale workshop held last July said, “It was phenomenal. Better than I expected. My Tribe can take a lot of what I learned from this and apply it moving forward.”

The workshops focus on five steps necessary to develop and finance renewable energy projects on tribal lands, including how to:

  • Assess project potential
  • Determine technology options
  • Refine the project
  • Implement financing and construction
  • Plan for project operation and maintenance.

There is no cost to attend the workshops, but participants must register in advance two weeks prior to each date. Attendees are responsible for their own lodging, meals, and travel costs.
