July 2013

Operational Awareness of Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant Low Activity Waste Melter Process System Hazards Analysis Activity [HIAR-WTP-2013-07-31]

This Independent Activity Report documents an oversight activity conducted by the Office of Health, Safety and Security’s (HSS) Office of Safety and Emergency Management Evaluations from July 31 – August 5, 2013, at the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP).  The activity consisted of HSS staff observing a limited portion of the hazards analysis (HA) for WTP Low Activity Waste (LAW) Melter Process system.

The primary purpose of this HSS field activity was to observe and understand the evolving approach used by Bechtel National, Inc., the contractor responsible for the design and construction of WTP for the Department of Energy Office of River Protection, to conduct system-by-system HAs as part of developing the documented safety analysis for the WTP LAW, Balance of Facility, and Analytical Laboratory nuclear facilities.
