Third Radiation Effects Research Foundation Board of Councilors Meeting Held in Hiroshima

The third Board of Councilors (BOC) meeting was held on June 18-19 at the Hiroshima Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF), a bi-national U.S.-Japan research organization. The BOC is the highest decision-making body at RERF, consisting of eight Councilors elected from the United States and Japan. A total of 23 participants, including 8 Councilors from the United States and Japan and officials from the U.S. and Japanese Governments, were present at the meeting. The Office of Health, Safety and Security (HSS) participated in the annual RERF BOC meeting as an observer.

The Councilors discussed RERF's research activities report, public relations activities, settlement of accounts report, future research activities plans and budget estimates, recommendations made by the RERF Scientific Advisory Committee, and RERF's responses to the recommendations, as well as appointments of Councilors, Directors, and Scientific Advisors. Reports concerning RERF's newly established Biosample Center, future research plans, and contributions following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident were made available at the meeting.

The Chief Health, Safety and Security Officer, Mr. Glenn Podonsky, addressed the Board members, expressing greetings and appreciation from the U.S. Government. He reiterated the commitment of HSS to stable funding for RERF, and the commitment of the Department of Energy to science. He also mentioned the importance of nurturing younger researchers on radiation issues. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) acknowledged the need to continue the research activities at RERF as related to the atomic-bomb survivors, and reiterated its intention to work closely with the U.S. Government so that RERF can continue as a joint United States/Japanese institution.

RERF is one of the major HSS programs. HSS provides funding and management oversight to the RERF in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in partnership with MHLW. Further information about RERF can be obtained at http://www.rerf.or.jp.
