The Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy today announced the appointment of David Mohler as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Clean Coal and Carbon Management.

Mohler will bring to the Department extensive operational experience in nuclear and fossil energy power generation.  He most recently served as senior vice president and chief technology officer for Duke Energy. In 2006, he led the creation of Duke Energy’s technology office.  From 1997 to 2006, he served as Senior Vice President for Strategic Planning at Cinergy.  In addition to his operational background, Mohler also has experience in human resources, business development and corporate marketing.

Mohler replaces Dr. Julio Friedmann, who will assume the position of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy.

"David brings a depth of knowledge to the Department," said Christopher Smith, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy. "From managing power plants to leading technology development as a senior executive, his experience and expertise is impressive.  We’re fortunate to have him on our Fossil Energy team."

Mohler has served on a number of advisory boards, including the Carnegie Mellon Electric Utility Industry Center and the Electric Power Research Institute’s Research Advisory Committee. He also served on the board of directors of the Asia Clean Energy Innovation Initiative.

Mohler earned a B.A. from Indiana University, a B.S. from the University of the State of New York at Albany, an M.A. from Xavier University of Cincinnati, and an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed the marketing management program at Columbia University and the executive development program at Penn State University.

The Office of Fossil Energy is responsible for research and development of technologies to ensure that fossil energy use is cleaner, safer, and more sustainable, as part of the President’s All-of-the-Above Energy Strategy.
