PIKETON, OH – Have you ever wanted to go inside the security fence at the Department of Energy’s former uranium enrichment facilities to see what’s behind the gates? Dr. Vince Adams, Site Director for the U.S Department of Energy, has announced that for the first time in the 60-year history of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, a limited number of general public tours are being offered this year with the first tour scheduled Saturday, April 7.
“We are excited to set up these special tours for the public to get a close-up view of the former uranium enrichment facilities before they are addressed under the Decontamination & Decommissioning (D&D) Project,” said Adams. “The plant, located on a 3,800-acre federal site, served our country’s defense and energy needs for nearly five decades and thousands of workers have passed through the security gates over the years. The tour will provide a unique opportunity to better understand the history of the plant, its current activities and future missions,” Adams added.
All interested participants must pre-register and tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. All tours are free of charge and each tour will accommodate a maximum of 40 people. A minimum of 20 participants will be required to conduct a tour. Seats are limited to two individuals per reservation. All attendees must be 18 years of age or older and must be U.S. citizens. No cameras, cell phones or other recording devices will be permitted.
The tours are being coordinated by D&D contractor Fluor-B&W Portsmouth and will involve moderate walking and climbing of stairs. Timeframe for the tours will be 8:30 a.m. until noon with badging and a brief welcome from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and the driving/walking tour from 9 a.m. to noon.
