VIENNA – U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu and Sergei Kiriyenko, Director General of Russia’s State Corporation for Atomic Energy (Rosatom), signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) on Monday concerning collaboration in innovative technologies for environmental restoration and radioactive waste management. The SOI focuses on EM areas of cooperation. Chu and Kiriyenko signed the SOI on the margins of the 56th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna.

The EM International Program, through continuous engagement with Rosatom International representatives and the DOE-Moscow office, negotiated the agreement and took action on Rosatom’s formal proposal to raise the SOI to the Secretary level for signature.

David Huizenga, Senior Advisor for EM, was also a participant at the SOI signing ceremony, where he emphasized his support for continuing the U.S.’s technical collaboration with Russia and explained how collaborating in research and development enables full leveraging of existing work for maximum returns on investment.
