Cincinnati – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today awarded a grant for the Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers (WORC) to the Savannah River Site Community Reuse Organization (SRSCRO), of Graniteville, South Carolina. The WORC program will support and enhance the nation’s environmental management efforts by increasing the number of qualified candidates with environmental technology based skills at SRS. The objective of the project is to provide nuclear science education programs that enable students to develop critical skills needed for careers supporting DOE-EM and NNSA’s nuclear missions. The diversity of the individuals in the target groups will ensure a steady supply of workers for many years to come. The grant has an approximate value of $5 million, with a performance period of 5 years.

The SRS Community Reuse Organization is a 501(c)(3) private non-profit organization charged with developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy to diversify the economy of a five-county region, the SRSCRO Region of Georgia and South Carolina. SRSCRO counties include Aiken, Allendale and Barnwell in South Carolina and Richmond (Augusta) and Columbia counties in Georgia.
