In response to public comments and requests, the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office is extending the public comment period for the Draft Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) for the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and Off-Site Locations in Nevada. The formal comment period will close on December 2, 2011, rather than October 27.
Within the draft SWEIS, the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office presents a formal analysis of how current and potential missions at the NNSS (formerly the Nevada Test Site) and related off-site locations may affect the environment over the next ten years.
“This document provides the community an in-depth analysis of the impacts resulting from current and potential activities,” said Scott Wade, the Assistant Manager for Environmental Management. “By extending the comment period, we are providing the public and stakeholders an additional opportunity to review and comment on the document.”
Five public hearings were completed during the last two weeks of September in Las Vegas, Pahrump, Tonopah, and Carson City, NV and St. George, UT. More than 150 people attended the hearings and provided more than 40 formal comments.
The draft document can be accessed online at www.nv.energy.gov/sweis, or by calling 877-781-6105. Public comments can be provided via the website, by calling 877-781-6105, faxing 702-295-5300, or by U.S. Mail at P.O. Box 98518, Las Vegas, NV 890193-8518 (attention: NNSS SWEIS Document Manager).
