The SunShot Initiative just launched the Sustainable and Holistic Integration of Energy Storage and Solar PV Program.

We call it … SHINES.

Lidijia Sekaric:
SHINES is the first program in our renewable portfolio that directly addresses coupling of electricity storage with a renewable power source.

We are addressing the integration of solar provided electricity with storage and load management for much greater flexibility in providing solar powered electricity around the clock.

SHINES is part of the Grid Modernization Initiative.

It’s the Energy Department’s larger effort to update our country’s electric grid.

Lidijia Sekaric:
GMI, or the Grid Modernization Initiative, helps the country in two very distinct ways. It helps the utilities that provide the backbone of a very essential service, and it also helps the consumers who will see lowered rates and who will see a much more stable grid.

SHINES, which has holistic in its name, is a systems-level solution for integrating solar with storage and load management. What that does for solar deployment is enabling much, much greater penetration at hundreds of gigawatts level, and increasing the value of solar on the grid.

At the completion of the SHINES projects, we anticipate having cost-effective, end-to-end solutions for solar generated electricity that is going to stand on its own as a reliable power source on the grid.
