SunShot Initiative awardee Dr. Dileep Singh of Argonne National Laboratory has been named a fellow of ASM International for his contributions to the science and technology behind concentrating solar power (CSP) and other energy innovations. This award is one of the highest honors in the field of materials science.

Dr. Singh is the leader of Argonne’s Energy Systems Thermal-Mechanical Technologies group, which focuses on materials and thermal management of various engineering systems, including thermal energy storage for CSP. Through an award from the SunShot Initiative, Singh and his team developed a latent heat-based thermal energy storage system that enhances the performance of the phase change material that stores heat. The enhancements were made using high conductivity graphite foam. The thermal performance achieved by this project is 20 times better than that of similar systems.

In addition to his research in solar energy, Singh’s team focuses on characterizing alloys under development to reduce vehicle weight, as well as developing cooling methods for the power electronics of hybrid electric vehicles.

Singh has won the R&D 100 award twice for his inventions and has been a fellow of the American Ceramic Society since 2009. At Argonne, he has been recognized with the Director's Award for Outstanding Achievement and the Pacesetter Award.
