To help address concerns over glare from solar energy installations and its impact on pilots, air traffic controllers, and motorists, Sandia National Laboratories developed the Solar Glare Hazard Analysis Tool (SGHAT), a free web-based tool that can quickly calculate potential visual hazards from proposed solar installations. The tool can quickly locate a site, outline the proposed solar array, and identify glare throughout the year (by time of day and season) to predict potential ocular impacts. SGHAT can also evaluate alternative designs and layouts to help mitigate glare impact and maximize energy production. Recognized as a top technology of the year, SGHAT was awarded a 2013 R&D 100 Award.
