With the support of a $4.4 million Recovery Act award from EERE, the National Fire Protection Association is training police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel on safely responding to accidents involving plug-in electric vehicles.  Because of these vehicles’ unique technology, first responders must use different procedures when approaching them, such as powering them down, avoiding their high-voltage batteries, and cutting in different locations on the vehicle body if responders need to rescue passengers. Training first responders on how to handle PEVs is essential to guarantee the safety of both drivers and first responders as these vehicles increase in popularity. This training includes both classroom courses and an online course available anywhere that helps departments in rural areas or with little funding complete the training. Professionals can earn continuing education credits by taking either set of courses.

Training first responders on PEV technology is a key part of helping communities get ready for mass market adoption of these vehicles. In addition to improving the technology, consumers need to feel confident that once they purchase a PEV, they will find driving it convenient, safe, and easy.  EERE is helping to improve PEV community readiness in a number of ways, including training stakeholders, improving permitting, and educating the public.
