With the support of $10.1 million from EERE (including funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act), more than matched by $13.6 million from partner organizations, Indiana Clean Cities and the Indiana Office of Energy Development have put more than 350 alternative fuel vehicles on the road and deployed 121 alternative fueling stations. EERE’s partners are using a variety of technologies and fuels in both light and heavy-duty vehicles, including natural gas, propane, hybrid electric drive, and E85 (a fuel blend containing up to 85% ethanol). Project partners estimate that they will displace the equivalent of nearly one million U.S. gallons of gasoline per year.

The success of this cost-share deployment project has resulted in additional local investment. For example, the City of Indianapolis, which deployed 11 propane and 25 hybrid vehicles under the project, has pledged to move their entire fleet to alternative fuels by 2025.

Some partners are also investigating innovative fueling technologies. AMP Americas, a National Clean Fleets Partner, received funding for a natural gas fueling station under this project. With this access to fuel, AMP Americas converted the fleet of 42 semi-tractor trucks they operate for Fair Oaks Dairy to compressed natural gas, saving millions of gallons of diesel fuel. Their experience was so positive that AMP Americas partnered with Fair Oaks to open an anaerobic digester that produces renewable natural gas from the dairy’s agricultural waste. After switching to renewable natural gas, the trucks will emit 80 percent fewer greenhouse gases over their lifecycle than comparable diesel trucks.
