In 2008, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation for a hydrogen storage engineering Center of Excellence (CoE) to research and develop onboard vehicular hydrogen storage systems and components that allow for a driving range of greater than 300 miles while meeting vehicular packaging, safety, cost, and performance requirements.

Recovery Act: Fuel Cell Market Transformation Projects

To expand the use of clean and renewable energy sources and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, DOE announced $41.9 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for 13 projects to deploy fuel cell technology in emergency backup power, material handling, and stationary fuel cell applications. Administration of H-Prize for Hydrogen Storage

In 2008, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation for the administration of the H-prize for hydrogen storage. This solicitation was to identify an organization to serve as an "Administering Entity" to implement the H-Prize, which competitively awards cash prizes to advance the research, development, demonstration, and commercial application of hydrogen energy technologies.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Analysis: Lessons Learned from Stationary Power Generation

In 2007, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation for hydrogen lessons learned. DOE sought applications to conduct a study to identify the lessons learned from prior hydrogen-based stationary power programs, including the most significant obstacles, how these obstacles have been approached, outcomes of the programs, and how this information can be used in the DOE Hydrogen Program.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Analysis: Environmental Impacts of Hydrogen Systems

In 2007, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation for hydrogen and fuel cell analysis on the environmental impacts of hydrogen systems. The purpose of this project was to identify and examine possible near and long-term ecological and environmental effects of the production of hydrogen from various energy sources (based on the DOE hydrogen production strategy) and the use of that hydrogen as a transportation fuel and for stationary power.

In 2006, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation inviting applicants to partner with DOE in facilitating the development of codes and standards for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and infrastructure.

Effects of a Transition to a Hydrogen Economy on Employment in the United States

In 2006, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation for the effects of a transition to a hydrogen economy on employment in the United States. DOE sought proposals to conduct a careful analysis of both emerging hydrogen technologies and the legacy technologies that will be displaced.

High-Temperature, Low-Relative Humidity Polymer-Type Membranes

In January 2006, DOE announced its selection of 12 competitively awarded, cost-shared projects for polymer membrane research to increase the durability and shelf life of polymer membranes, while simultaneously bringing down the cost. Collectively, these projects will receive up to $19 million in federal funding over five years.

In 2006, the Fuel Cell Technologies Office released a solicitation for research and development for onboard vehicle hydrogen storage. Projects supported existing DOE Hydrogen Storage Centers of Excellence or independent R&D projects in specific technical topic areas such as materials discovery; engineering science; new synthesis, characterization, and testing techniques; and analysis.

FY 2005

Hydrogen Production and Delivery Research

This award funded over $75 million in hydrogen production and delivery research projects to support the President's Hydrogen Initiative. Specific award categories included solar electrochemical water splitting (photoelectrochemical); solar thermal water splitting; solar biological (microorganisms); small-scale natural gas/bio-derived liquid reformers; electrolyzers; biomass and hydrocarbon gas separation technologies; delivery technologies; and analysis. The projects involved 36 lead organizations and include over 80 teaming organizations.

FY 2004

The Grand Challenge Hydrogen Storage Centers of Excellence

This award established three "Centers of Excellence" for exploratory research in hydrogen storage—at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. In addition, individual universities, research institutes, and small businesses will explore new materials for hydrogen storage. The DOE share for this National Hydrogen Storage Project is $150 million over 5 years with an additional private cost share of approximately $20 million.

Vehicle and Infrastructure Learning Demonstrations

This award funds five "learning demonstrations" that will provide important data to focus research efforts. Automakers and energy companies will work together with their teams under this project to demonstrate integrated and complete system solutions operating in real world environments. The expected DOE share is $190 million over 5 years with an additional private cost share of approximately $190 million.

Controlled Hydrogen Fleet and Infrastructure Demonstration and Validation Project team members

Portable Power, Auxiliary Power Units, and R&D for Off-Road Fuel Cell Applications

This award funded fuel cell research projects that address critical cost and durability issues for consumer electronics, portable power, and auxiliary power unit fuel cell systems, as well as innovative research and development for off-road fuel cell applications. The DOE share was $13 million dollars over 3 years with an additional private cost share of approximately $10 million.

Hydrogen Technology Learning Centers

In March 2004, DOE's Fuel Cell Technologies Office, in partnership with the State Technology Advancement Collaborative (STAC), awarded funding for the development and operation of hydrogen technology learning centers at universities, colleges, or other educational institutions to educate students, potential end users such as fleets or building developers, local officials, and the public about the vision of a hydrogen economy.

Hydrogen Education Development

Hydrogen technology education projects included middle school and high school curricula and teacher professional development. These projects paired hydrogen technology experts with professional educators and experienced curriculum developers to create hands-on activities and lessons to engage students in the developing hydrogen economy. The hydrogen education projects also included the development of materials suitable for a general audience.

FY 2003

Advanced Hydrogen Fuel Cell Research

In July 2003, DOE announced the selection of 13 firms and educational institutions in 12 states to receive $75 million in cost-shared awards to fund new research in advanced fuel cell technology for vehicles, buildings, and other applications. This was combined with earlier awards to an additional 11 firms and universities in eight states for $21 million in hydrogen storage, production, and sensor technologies.
