The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is currently conducting research into high efficiency, low emission supermarket refrigeration technologies.
The project involves the development of a supermarket refrigeration system that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption when compared to existing systems. The challenge is to design a system that is capable of achieving low refrigerant leak rates while significantly reducing both the energy consumption and the refrigerant charge size.
Research is being undertaken between DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The goal of this project is to design a supermarket refrigeration system that has 25% to 30% lower energy consumption than existing supermarket refrigeration systems, while also reducing greenhouse gases.
Benefits and Impacts
The results of this project will initially be used to encourage the early adoption of the high efficiency, low emission refrigeration system technology by major national food retailers. Using their volume buying power, large food retailers will be able to reduce the cost of the new refrigeration system, thereby increasing the market penetration of the new technology to smaller food retailers.
