Lead Performer: U.S. Department of Energy – Washington, D.C.
Project Term: Ongoing
Funding Type: Direct Funding
Program Website: Home Performance with ENERGY STAR

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® (HPwES) program provides information to consumers and the home energy improvement industry to produce quality energy-efficient upgrades that result in safer, healthier, and more durable homes. The U.S. Department of Energy works in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support local HPwES program sponsors, such as utilities and state energy offices, to qualify the contractors to identify and install these upgrades.

HPwES is unique because local sponsors independently verify the quality of participating contractors' work. As a result, homeowners can feel confident in their contractor's recommendations and in the effectiveness of the work they are paying for.

PROJECT IMPACT

HPwES has upgraded more than 330,000 homes since 2002, with average homeowner savings of more than $500 annually post-upgrade. The program is working to facilitate the achievement of scale in the home performance industry by demonstrating value and moving toward replicable delivery models that support expanded participation in the HPwES program.
