The Energy Department today announced a $10 million funding opportunity to help demonstrate and deploy energy efficiency technologies for commercial buildings, including projects that will bring next generation building systems and components to a broader market faster – helping to save building owners and businesses money by saving energy.

The 2013 Next Generation LuminairesTM (NGL) Design Competition outdoor lighting category winners were announced Wednesday night at the Strategies in Light conference in Santa Clara, California. The competition, sponsored by the Energy Department, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the International Association of Lighting Designers, was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) commercial lighting fixtures, or “luminaires.”
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has added a new microsite to complement its 2013 report, Assessment of Advanced Solid State Lighting. The report explores the history of public policy on lighting, evaluates costs and consumer acceptance issues, assesses the development of LED and OLED technologies, and examines SSL products, applications, and deployments noting the potential for lowering U.S. energy needs and positioning the nation as a significant solid-state lighting manufacturer and technology provider.
Thank you to all who participated in the 11th annual DOE Solid-State Lighting R&D Workshop, held January 28-30 in Tampa, Florida. With passion, enthusiasm, and lots of new ideas, 200 attendees explored such topics as creating added value with intelligent lighting and using spectral control to shape the lighting experience. The workshop presentations and materials are now available.
The Energy Department recognized the City of Los Angeles, California, for its leadership in the Department's Better Buildings Challenge helping the city save on energy costs and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
An article has been published in LEUKOS: The Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) that may be of interest to the solid-state lighting community. Entitled "Lumen Maintenance and Light Loss Factors: Consequences of Current Design Practices for LEDs," the article was written by Michael Royer of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and discusses complications related to the lamp lumen depreciation (LLD) light loss factor and LEDs.
