CLEAResult, a Better Buildings Residential Network member, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) selected Charles Xie’s Infrared Street View program as the winner of the JUMP Smartphone Call for Innovation, which seeks to develop new energy-efficient residential building technologies that leverage the smartphone platform.

Charles Xie received $3,000 and in-kind support from CLEAResult to develop the Infrared Street View program, which uses existing smartphone infrared camera attachments as well as crowdsourcing through school programs, to create thermal maps of neighborhoods. The thermal images and corresponding temperature data points can be used to uncover anomalies and identify potential upgrades.

Judges included the U.S Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Steve Dunn and Jonathan Cohen; Claire Miziolek from Residential Network member Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP); and Emily Kemper from CLEAResult.
