DOE Launches Lab Call to Develop Manufacturing Training

The Energy Department is accepting applications from its National Labs to develop manufacturing training for cleantech entrepreneurs. The goal of the training is to prepare clean energy hardware entrepreneurs for manufacturing at scale by giving them the information and tools required to make manufacturing-related decisions, assess product design and manufacturing readiness, and productively engage with experts. The DOE National Laboratories are eligible to apply, while interested, non-lab, parties are encouraged to reach out to National Laboratories directly or to CleanEnergyManufacturing@EE.doe.gov to be connected. Learn more about this opportunity in the upcoming webinar on July 11. The application deadline is July 26, 2016 at 5:00 PM EST.

AMO Joins Effort to Create Historic Partnership on Carbon Fiber Recycling

On Friday, July 1, three partners in the composites industry came together for a ceremonial signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) commemorated by Senator Maria Cantwell and other officials at the state of the art CRTC facility in Port Angeles, Washington. The collaborative agreement brought together the Composite Recycling Technology Center (CRTC), the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), and Peninsula College to develop advanced methods of recycling composite materials. The agreement establishes CRTC as a strategic partner in IACMI, and allows Peninsula College to expand their curriculum to include workforce development for composites manufacturing.

AMO Director Mark Johnson gave a few remarks and discussed the importance of IACMI, one of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) institutes supported by AMO. These institutes play an important role in driving innovation within unique areas of concentration in manufacturing through strategic public-private partnerships with the support of the Department of Energy.

AMO Sponsored Research Continues to Advance Polymer Manufacturing Methods

AMO awarded $1.5 million to Tulane University in December 2014 to use its Automatic Continuous Online Monitoring of Polymerization reactions (ACOMP) platform to develop an automated system, which could use ACOMP measurements to determine and make the required corrective actions during the process to ensure the quality of the final product.

In partnership with Louisiana State University and Advanced Polymer Monitoring Technologies, LLC, Tulane researchers were able to demonstrate a successful pilot-scale system design at the end of 2015. The partnership is continuing to improve and scale the technology to meet commercial polymer manufacturing requirements.
