NOTICE OF INTENT: Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Reducing EMbodied-energy And Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) in Materials Manufacturing

The Energy Department intends to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement for approximately $70 million entitled “Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Reducing EMbodied-energy And Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) in Materials Manufacturing”. The resulting Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute is expected to be a Department of Energy (DOE) supported Institute participating in the interagency National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) program. This Institute will enable the development and widespread deployment of key industrial platform technologies that will dramatically reduce life-cycle carbon emissions and energy consumption associated with materials production and processing through the development of technologies for reuse, recycling and remanufacturing of materials. EERE envisions awarding a single financial assistance award in the form of a cooperative agreement. The estimated period of performance for the award will be 5 years with the goal of the Institute to be self-sustaining by the end of the project period.

Chapter 6: Sustainable Manufacturing – Flow of Materials through Industry of the 2015 Quadrennial Technology Review is Now Available Online

The “Sustainable Manufacturing – Flow of Materials through Industry” technology assessment was prepared in support of Chapter 6: Innovating Clean Energy Technologies in Advanced Manufacturing. This chapter discusses how clean energy manufacturing reduces energy and environmental impacts of the production, use, and disposal of goods. Opportunities for improvements in energy and materials utilization are also examined in three spaces including individual manufacturing processes and unit operations goods-producing facilities, manufacturing supply chains and manufactured goods, including impacts from all phases of the product life cycle.

This chapter along with the entire Quadrennial Technology Review can be found here.

2016 Better Buildings Summit Brings Out Industry Experts, Celebrates Progress and Achievements

Better Buildings, Better Plants program and Challenge partners, and other DOE experts and stakeholders, came together last week for the 2016 Better Buildings Summit. The summit, which was held at the Superior Energy Performance (SEP) certified Washington Hilton Hotel, included discussions on future opportunities for greater efficiency in American factories, homes and buildings. AMO, hosted several events for the Better Plants partners including the Better Plants Technology Transfer Lunch, an armchair discussion with AMO Director Dr. Mark Johnson and Neal Elliott, Senior Director for Research at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), a Better Plants Awards Ceremony, and a seminar series on compressed air, steam, pumping, and process heating.

AMO Director Mark Johnson Moderates Panel at 2016 American Energy & Manufacturing Competitiveness (AEMC) Northeast Regional Summit

The Council of Competitiveness and DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) hosted the 2016 American Energy & Manufacturing Competitiveness (AEMC) Northeast Regional Summit on Thursday, May 12 at City College of New York in New York City. This annual summit, in its fourth year brought together leaders from industry, academia, labor, national laboratories and government. AMO Director Dr. Mark Johnson participated in the "Investing in Shared Infrastructure and Innovation Ecosystems for Global Competitiveness" panel. Dr. Johnson shared a brief perspective on the state of U.S. manufacturing and with help from the panel, explored new models of innovation pioneered by DOE such as Cyclotron Road and the Technologist-in-Residence program.

DOE Launches Combined Heat and Power for Resiliency Accelerator

On May 9th the Combined Hear and Power (CHP) for Resiliency Accelerator as part of the Better Buildings Initiative was launched at the White House with high level administration and DOE officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency Dr. Kathleen Hogan, and 21 city, state, and utility partners. The goal is to expand the consideration of CHP and other distributed generation opportunities in resiliency planning at various levels within a community. CHP Deployment Program Manager Claudia Tighe also participated in a virtual roundtable discussion with Secretary Moniz, Senior Policy Advisor David Foster, Deputy Assistant Secretary Hogan and other officials to launch a partnership between DOE, the Partnership for Quality Care and the Service Employees International Union and its major hospitals to address climate change and resiliency by focusing on energy and water conservation in partnership with DOE. This roundtable kicked off a series of webinars and direct technical assistance from the CHP Deployment Program to help partnering hospitals assess their CHP opportunities.
