Through partnerships such as Energy Development in Island Nations (EDIN), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) collaborate to support clean energy initiatives in international locations.

Efforts like these demonstrate the potential of market-ready energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and provide valuable experience and lessons learned to inform clean energy initiatives throughout the world.

Energy Development in Island Nations

DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) coordinates the United States' involvement in the EDIN international partnership. This effort that aims to help islands across the globe adopt energy efficiency measures and tap into indigenous renewable resources while developing a holistic model for island clean energy development that can be replicated by islands worldwide.

EERE experts work directly with island governments, utilities, business leaders, and grassroots supporters to guide clean energy strategy and development. Partnering countries receive on-the-ground technical assistance with identifying and implementing technology, financing, and policy solutions suited to specific energy and infrastructure needs, unique cultural dynamics, and available renewable resources.

EDIN pilot projects include:

  • Iceland and Dominica Collaboration

    This pilot project that will leverage Iceland's proven model of transition from a fossil fuel–dependent economy to a clean energy economy to help Dominica harness its renewable energy potential. As part of this effort, the United Nations University Geothermal Training Programme, which has operated in Iceland since 1979, will provide training to Dominican institutions to help building capacity for geothermal exploration and development.

  • New Zealand's Geothermal Potential in the Pacific

    This pilot project will assess the potential for geothermal electricity generation in a number of Pacific island nations, including U.S. territories. It will focus on harnessing the potential of geothermal resources to provide base load electricity to Pacific island nations at a fraction of the cost of diesel generation. A study of 20 Pacific island nations being conducted by GNS Science, New Zealand's leading earth systems research institute, will be used to evaluate the suitability of geothermal to the islands' existing grid infrastructures.
